I woke up and looked outside. It was \u20133\u00b0F, light snow was falling and the wind was calm. I grabbed my gear, drove to Powder Mountain, rode the new Lightning Ridge lift, and hiked up and over the top of James Peak with skis on my back and a heavy camera rig on my arm. I traversed the ridge and set up in Shug\u2019r Bowl, about 4 turns from the top. The northerly flow, known locally as the \u201cCache Valley Effect\u201d delivered light snowflakes with incredible detail. Each crystal had a similar inner shape. I stayed there taking photos all day until the ski patrol started sweep.
